What Independence Day should mean to Progressives

Conservatives have long  claimed ownership of the term “patriotism”. By shaping the debate they have made it virtually impossible for liberals to call themselves patriotic without being mocked. On Independence day we remember the patriotic heritage of the Democratic Party and progressive politics. This can serve as a history lesson for Florida’s Republican Party dominated by crony capitalists and those who favor style over intellect.

Thomas Jefferson, whose brilliance and thoughtfulness made the American War for Independence a true revolution of ideas and ideals and Andrew Jackson, who was the first American President to reach out to the mass of people who were not aristocrats are the inspirations for the modern Democratic Party. Jackson achieved the greatest military victory of America’s first half century as the General who defeated the British regulars at the Battle of New Orleans. In reality, it was the first time the Americans had faced a British elite force in either the War for Independence or the War of 1812. Jackson also struggled to preserve the union and by rejecting South Carolina’s attempts to “nullify” the tariff of 1828, Jackson preserved the union and laid the groundwork for Abraham Lincoln a generation later to save the union from Civil War and secession.

Much like Rick Scott and Pam Bondi who have pushed their own doctrine of nullification with regards to Barack Obama’s Affordable Health Care Act, Jackson stood down John C. Calhoun’s attempts at nullification and preserved the union. Jefferson’s brilliance and idealism was recognized all over the world and he was in fact the inspiration for many of the Revolutions that swept Europe in the 1800s.

In the 20th century, while Republicans avoided conflict and pushed isolationism and a degree of nativism, Democrats fought wars which protected and promoted liberty and spread freedom throughout the globe. American ideals and commercial growth followed thanks to the work of Democratic Presidents. Woodrow Wilson spread the principle of self determination and freedom throughout newly liberated countries despite domestic opposition form conservatives. Franklin Roosevelt armed the British and maneuvered the USA towards fighting the fascists in Europe and Asia despite intense conservative domestic opposition. Democrats passed countless domestic programs that ensured the health and welfare of those who fought for freedom despite conservative opposition. Ours was a nation that cared for its veterans and made countless sacrifices to promote freedom and liberty across the globe.

During the Cold War, conservatives in both parties attempted to marginalize progressives as sympathetic to the Soviet Union. While some Republicans such as Arthur Vandenberg worked with Democrats to foster a bi-partisan bulwark against communism, others politicized every move made by a progressive. That pattern has continued since September 11th, 2011.
One could argue George W. Bush was an heir to the liberal legacy of Woodrow Wilson. Bush’s idealism and desire to spread democracy were liberal ideas. He also spent liberally on domestic programs and welcomed immigrants and others who could help enhance American society. However his execution of these ideals, and his selection of advisers, were  incompetent and weakened American security both at home and abroad. Yet criticism and dissent towards Bush’s Administration were labeled unpatriotic which is ironic coming from the ideological heirs of those who supported the British during the revolution, those who sought to break up the Union in the 1800s and those who stonewalled potential American involvement in both world wars.

Today, freedom and liberal ideals are under attack abroad. Islamic fundamentalism, a resurgent imperialist Russia and a dangerous China are all on the march. These forces of evil do not share our values and represent a clear threat to American interests. Much like Democratic Presidents of yesteryear, President Obama must confront these threats aggressively.

The next time a conservative refers to progressives as anti-american or unpatriotic please arm them with the facts. While many conservatives are highly patriotic, some are simply too quick to call liberals unpatriotic to be taken seriously.

I thought we couldn’t celebrate our true independence until I moved to Canada 🙂

Nicely written and argued but a bit too partisan a rant for my liking.

Is this a call for war against Russia or China? A hope for more if Bush and less of Obama? It reads like it.

We have real enemies abroad. This Administration has been totally naive to this. The world knew where George W. Bush stood. Often in the wrong place but he was fortunate in that he had a strong and savvy ally in Tony Blair. Obama has no such luck with the ineffectual, indecisive and somewhat clownish David Cameron leading our greatest ally.

The Democrats have a legacy as a party to be the leaders on foreign policy, the leaders spreading our ideals of freedom and liberty abroad. But right now we are retreating and it is dangerous.

Words escape me in reading this. This appears to be a manifesto for American imperialism. I would expect to see a rant like this at Human Events. Not at a so called progressive website.

Pres. Obama has changed the Democratic Party. I am aware throughout history most wars have been started by Democrats. But the American people are sick and tired of war. They don’t need to war mongering parties.

I am proud in our “Democratic Wars,” and assuming you are actually a Democrat and not a Republican troll you should be as well. Democrats took on Nazism and Fascism while many Republicans wanted to stay out of the war and harbored a sympathy for Nazism. We fought to stop the North Koreans from taking South Korea. We worked to eliminate genocide in the Balkans under President Clinton and Tony Blair who was a ideologically aligned with us. The Vietnam War started out as a just cause but the conduct of the US in prosecuting the war particularly after Nixon became President was shameful.

        Was the Iraq War just?

Just or wise? I strongly opposed the Iraq War. But was it just? Yeah Saddam Hussien was a murderous dictator. The Iraqi people enjoy greater freedoms now after the US invasion and occupation than before. Was it in our national interest to go to war in Iraq? Hell no. Never was and will go down in history as the worst blunder in post WWII America foreign policy. Applying a model of realpolitik meant Saddam should have become a US ally due to his opposition to both AL-Qaeda and Iran.

All of these Middle Eastern wars are unhealthy sideshows that strain our economy, lose us good American lives and bring war weariness to our country. We will have to confront Russian and Chinese aggression at some point in the near future. It might be militarily. Because of the unwise Middle Eastern adventures of both Bush and Obama the likelihood of selling the need for military action to let us say defend Japan or Poland in the future is almost nill. That is bad for America.

It is really unfair to link republicans to fascism as you do here. I know this was meant to be red meat to the base but whoa!

How? In 1940 the Republicans were trying by every means necessary to keep the US out of the European war and many privately cheered on the Germans and were hoping for Britain to fall.
