Finally, insurgent progressive media gains traction in Florida

screen-shot-2016-10-26-at-9-33-14-pmI’ve either been doing insurgent progressive media — or studying it, consuming it, and supporting it — since I was in college. When I started my alternative weekly in the early 90s it was in response to being pitched by a right-winger hoping to launch a tabloid project. Needless to say, there was no way in hell I was going to lift a finger to nurture a media enterprise serving right wing interests. Our progressive publishing company flourished in uber-conservative East Tennessee as a private enterprise, while his right wing propaganda sheet never made it off the drawing board. Kinda ironic when viewed through his lens of free market fundamentalism.

It grinds my gears to a nub that media projects are generously funded by the right wing, while the left limps along with blogs and newsletters. The right wing has been at it since Dinesh D’Souza was still in underoos. It’s long overdue that progressive funders who spend millions on building coalition infrastructure, also invest in the modern miracle of mass communications.

That’s my rant, and here’s some light to go with the heat: folks with real talent and vision are stepping up with amazing, media projects. To whit, Conversations with America is a high quality YouTube show produced by Ben (Weaver) America in association with The People’s White House in Daytona Beach.

Best of all, this showcase for progressive voices and ideas is made right here in The I-4 Corridor — so suck it, Tom Tillison.

Conversations with America is funny, relevant and fiercely independent. Here’s Ben’s interview with Florida Sen. Dwight Bullard. Upcoming episodes will feature Carlos Guillermo Smith (candidate for HD-49 in Orlando) and Bob Poe (past primary candidate, CD-10).

Go to Ben’s YouTube page and subscribe right now because you don’t want to miss a single episode.

And enjoy this conversation with Dwight.

I may be a little biased because I consider Dwight a friend of mine. This is a great interview with a great man. Growing up in a Jewish family in New York every now and then you would here the term Mensch used when talking about a person. It was used to describe a person of impeccable character and morals. This is a man to vote and fight for.
