DeSantis is DEAD WRONG on Climate Change and Hurricane history in Florida
Following the landfall of Milton Governor DeSantis claimed climate change had nothing to do with increased tropical activity and the size of storms by cherry picking some data about strength of storms around the center. This is almost irrelevant when we talk about the widespread effects of more recent storms that have impacted the states […]
Florida’s Bubble is bursting again
20 million people led by elected officials in the pockets of special interests and being stuffed into a peninsula vulnerable to tropical systems and with a fragile ecosystem based around the Everglades, Springs, aquifers and the St Johns River has created the elements for Florida’s collapse. This wouldn’t be the first time such a thing […]
Helene’s historical impacts: Crazy wind gusts ON THE ATLANTIC COAST from a GULF storm
Helene was a gulf storm that normally would not have even raised winds to 25 MPH on the east coast. But the monster wind field delivered some incredibly high wind gusts hundreds of miles from the storm’s center and lashed the east coast of the state with sustained tropical storm winds for 12 hours. Here […]
Horrific Historic Helene: HUGE impacts on the peninsula without a peninsular landfall- where historically does this rank in modern (post 1990) Florida? (This isn’t even considering the more serious Big Bend impacts yet)
I have been watching and tracking Hurricanes since the 1980’s. We constantly hear about “the big one” or the “Storm of the Century” etc for those of us here in Florida. First it was Andrew, then Charley, then Wilma, then Irma, Michael and Ian. While Andrew and Michael were stronger storms in terms of winds, […]
Helene now a major Hurricane; Sunshine Skyway closed
The NHC has indicated Helene had reached Category 4 strength with maximum winds around 120 MPH as of 2:25 Eastern. The storm has blanketed the state with heavy winds, incredibly putting ALL of the peninsula into TS force winds as of 2pm. In addition to the heavy winds, Tornadic activity has blanketed the state from […]
Latest Helene impacts: Tornadic activity in Manatee, Brevard and Volusia; storm surge impacts in Collier, concern for Tampa Bay and about that “shift” (really wobble) east.
The latest satellite activity shows a slight wobble to the east of the center of the storm. This has raised concern in the Tampa Bay area of a shift to the east and potential direct impacts among residents there. DO NOT PANIC. The shift appears to be a mere wobble which does potentially shift the […]
First impacts from Helene: 64 MPH wind gust at FLL Airport in Broward; Tornadic activity in Collier, Glades, Hendry, Martin, St Lucie and Indian River
While the worst of Helene is certain to impact the Gulf Coast and Big Bend areas of the state, we already have some limited but surprising impacts on the east coast and in the interior of the southern part of the peninsula. Below is graphical information from the NWS Stations in Miami and Melbourne.
Helene Wednesday AM update- entire peninsula under a Hurricane or Tropical Storm Warning. Entire panhandle under a Hurricane Warning except Escambia, Okaloosa & Santa Rosa
Helene’s central pressure has dropped under 980 mbar this morning, indicating a strengthening storm. Model Guidance has been fairly consistent in steering the storm toward the big bend region with a few outlier models taking the storm a little further west the Wakulla or Franklin counties However, it is important that Florida residents not […]
Helene coverage
With Helene barreling toward impacting much of the state, this will be our focus on TFS the next several days. We’ve had rare model convergence on a storm path for the last few days with this system, partly due to other atmospheric conditions- a dip in the Jet Stream and High Pressure sitting on the […]
