Poll: Should Nan Rich Withdraw from the Governor’s Race?

UPDATE 5PM ET TUE 6/3 – THIS POLL IS NOW CLOSED

Historically, based on empirical evidence, I believe Gubernatorial primaries have been productive exercises for political parties and candidates. By contrast however, a school of thought has developed in Florida Democratic Party circles that having a primary for Governor this year is hurting the party and the prospects to defeat Governor Rick Scott. Every election cycle is different and some have advocated a view that this year it is important for the Democrats not to have a primary. What are the thoughts of our readers?

Answer the poll below and feel free to leave respectful comments. The poll closes at 5pm on Tuesday.

  1. Absolutely she should get out of a race that she cannot win. She needs to remember the most important thing is to get rid of Rick Scott. All the resources need to go to the candidate that can win, Crist is that candidate.

    1. Nancy, you don’t know squat. Not only is Nan going to beat Crist she is our only chance to beat Scott. Charlie will be destroyed by Scott’s highly paid swift boaters. They know where all the bodies are buried. Charlie is fading and Nan is surging. If the FDP thinks they should anoint a candidate instead of letting the voters decide by having debates and primaries I suggest they move to Iran and give the party back to the people.

I feel that getting rid of Scott is not the most important thing (though I have been wanting that for four years.) the most important thing is to get rid of Scott WITHOUT using unfair tricks. I could easier live with four more years of Scott than live with a Democratic party in Florida which puts force on a legitimate life-long Democrat to drop out of the race.

  2. I think that giving the people a voice in the primary is Democracy and even more important than defeating Rick Scott. If I am denied my right to vote for the candidate of my choice in a primer, I will choose between the other two, but will not be forced to vote for the Democratic candidate by a party in Florida that is not behaving as a party in a Democracy. Instead her poll numbers haven’t budged and it has become abundantly clear that Charlie Crist will be the Democratic nominee. If she really wants to serve our state and move it to the left, she should drop out now and work to elect Crist, not tear down someone who will most likely be the nominee.

Molly, the reason that Nan Rich has had problems with money and getting her name out there is active sabotage by the FDP, and the DNC. I am a close friends with a few big money donors and the were expressly told to stay away from Nan Rich because the party had already designated a candidate and the media was told the same. This has been going on for over a year as the party was waiting for the 12 month registration clock to run out for Crist. It is beyond disgusting and is one of the reasons that I will NEVER give a dime to the FDP or DNC. What little money I have goes directly to progressives candidates and groups (DFA, PCCC) that truly reflect the principles that the FDP claims to espouse.

With Crist, the voting record is the total opposite. So, how come so many Democrats are all that exited about Crist? How come Democrats ignore the real Democratic candidate in this race? Normally I would argue that having a primary doesn’t really hurt any candidate it only improves his or her name recognition and gives the victor momentum.

However in this race and in this moment in time…it’s different.

First, Nan Rich is getting slaughtered in the money race (Nan’s $100,000 to Charlie’s $12 plus million) and weather anyone likes it or not, in a state as huge as Florida with 20 million residents, money is everything…and unfortunately that is how every candidate is judged..period. The reality is that with so little money, Nan could barely run a city council or county commission race much less your average State House or State Senate race which averages several hundred thousand upwards to a million plus dollars. Gov and Sen Graham’s daughter, Gwen who is running for Congress in North Florida, has been at it for a year and she has just barely passed the 2 million dollar mark. So with a hundred million dollar Governor’s race staring you in the face against the Republicans, it’s just folly to think that Nan is going to be able to compete vs Charlie Crist against Rick Scott for a statewide Governor’s race.

Second, OK forget the money, how you doing in the polls Nan? Well, there again, Nan is getting slaughtered there too. No even a blip on the radar. Why, because she is running up against a former sitting Governor, with statewide name recognition, who has run statewide multiple times and has held statewide office as Attorney General as well. Charlie’s personal approval ratings statewide show’s consistently that he is well liked by a vast majority of Floridians, especially Independents where most elections are won or lost, no matter what Scott has thrown at him. And Nan is still a little known liberal former Democratic State Senator from the southeast corner of the state. Not where most Floridians are. As opposed to Charlie who is from the key swing central part of Florida.

Third, as you see with candidates who try and run for President from both parties who see the light and drop out after only one or two primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, Nan has to be realistic and pragmatic and as with most sensible, rational politicians of her experience and stature that no matter how much it is going to kill her inside and especially her supporters who are writing here in the previous comments above, she would be far better respected as a true life long Democrat and Floridian who cares about the Party and her state if she would would wake up and the light and smell the roses and realize that it is over for her campaign and her candidacy. I know it’s hard when you have such loyal supporters and when you have put your hart and soul into what you want. But the big picture is that the Democrats need to win the Governor’s race and Nan ain’t hacking it.

As someone who has been in the business for many, many decades, the reality is that politics IS a business. It’s not a sport or a game. There are only winners and losers and there is no prize for second or third place. And Nan, sadly, has already lost the minute Gov Charlie Crist jumped into the race.

And judging by the comments here now and in the past by her supporters, her continuing in the race would only be that of a spoiler that would insure that the worst Tea Party Governor in the history of Florida, Rick Scott, would get reelected. Sadly, I have seen the hatred and vitriolic comments from Nan’s supporters here about how they would sit home and let Scott win and that Charlie is no better than Scott. Well neither of those things are true. Charlie has switched parties to become a Democrat and has embraced the issues and principals and platform of what Democrats care about and believe in weather Nan and her supporters like it or not.

As far a switching parties from Republican to be a Democrat…In Pinellas County for example, there are several elected Democrats holding office today who have switched from being Republicans, County Commission Chairman Ken Welch, State Representatives Darryll Rousoun and Carl Zimmermann and DEC Chair Mark Hanisee. In Hillsborough County few people know that liberal openly gay County Commissioner Kevin Beckner was also once a registered Republican as well.

We as Democrats should welcome anyone who wants to join the “big tent”party with open arms, just like the Republicans did years ago when their ranks swelled when the race was on in the other direction.

That means taking people in that you may not always like or agree with. This is a free county after all isn’t it?

I agree that Charlie is not “perfect” but in the “business” of politics nobody really is. And what the Democrats and Floridians really need right now in Tallahassee is balance and a break in the two decade old stranglehold of Republican Tea Party rule in of every facet of state government in Tallahassee and Florida

So in summary, I do like Nan Rich as a person and as a politician who stands up for what is right and for what she believes in. But unfortunately, Nan does need to drop out now and begin the healing process for herself and her supporters right away and become a part of the Charlie Crist team and unite every Democrat and help take over and remove the Republican scum from some of the large bureaucracy in Tallahassee. Big key Departments like Education or DPR, could use Nan’s talents and abilities to look out for every Floridian’s future. There are a lot of big Republican jobs and races to fill in Tallahassee and Nan could pick any one she wants right now…except Governor.

Nan does not need to be the Ralph Nader who ran in Florida and pealed away enough Democratic and Independent voters that allowed Bush to become President…and we know how that one ended…badly.

We need to unite EVERY Democrat to work together to beat the $100 million dollar Republican onslaught that’s coming and beat the Tea Party once and for all.

Because we’ve done it the Florida Democratic Party’s way for 20 years and it ain’t working. So in Charlie’s case it takes one to know one…so at least we have a fighting chance to win!

  14. Primaries have many purposes, not just winning in November. It brings party members out, stimulates debate, ideas and encourages communication between party members. It teaches the democratic process to our youth and increases a chance to get involved and support your candidate of choice..

More then that, it helps evolve policies for the ultimate winner, giving value to the issues disagreed upon. Those who wish to short change the process because of costs and a belief that it results in more wins are deluding themselves and miss the point of the democratic process.

Let the process go forward and it works. Begin to play with the rules and you lose balance and fairness and the party ultimately defeats itself. You need not search far, we are in the present state of affairs because we have done precisely that, interfered with our process for years.

If you repeat the same action over and over again and fail then do not expect a different result, if you do, that defines stupidity.

Let the process go forward. Rich and Crist should respect the system, debate each other and agree that the winner will be endorsed by the loser and strengthen the party with unity. Otherwise you should just stay home and let Scott be reelected.

  25. NO. We need candidates in primaries that will get issues out on the table for the presumed winner to have to address. Charlie Crist seems to be & say whatever it takes to get elected. We shouldn’t make it easier for him to skate by until it is a hold your nose match-up between him and Skeletor. Make him get on record about progressive causes by showing him people want progressive candidates by keeping Nan in as long as possible.

If you don’t believe in the primary process then how is our party less different than those who we say make it harder for people to vote? Although I would not support Crist because his stances on policy and dirty money from a war profiteerer (Yes it was in the NY times), I am so disgusted with FDP. You have lost your way and you have also lost many of the voters.

Charlie Crist should drop out of the race, He is guy who stands for whatever will get him elected. He needs to come out of the closet first and then grow up before running for anything. He refuses to debate because he knows he will lose. I will never vote for someone who refuses to debate. I am voting for Nan no matter who wins the primary because I am a Democrat who believes in debate and voting someone with a proven record as a Democrat. Crist is the one who needs to drop out of the race and get an honest life.

  29. YOU ALL NEED TO UNDERSTAND THIS FACT!

Republicans and Democratic leadership are making Florida’s governor race a battle between Evil and Evil: Republican governor Rick Scott working for health care industry vs. personal injury lawyers championed by former Republican governor, now Democratic candidate, Charlie Crist.

Scott’s former company pulled off the largest Medicare rip-off in history, and paid a record $1.7 billion in fines (out of profits made by overcharging for health care). Scott walked away with over $300 million. Now one of his many million-dollar donors has state Medicaid contracts worth $1 billion.

Crist’s latest employer is John Morgan of Morgan and Morgan, one of the richest personal injury lawyers in America. Crist has millions in campaign contributions from lawyers who expect him to appoint plaintiff-friendly judges and justices. Among Crist’s former big contributors and buddies is former lawyer Scott Rothstein, now serving 50 years for a billion-dollar Ponzi scheme. Trial lawyers are a major factor in the outrageous costs of health care, yet provide citizens their only recourse against predatory and sometimes negligent health insurance companies and providers.

Therefore, Nan Rich should stay in the primary, and you all on your part vote for her! This would be the first right step to take.

  30. Democrats who do not support Charlie Crist are only helping Rick Scott.

What makes Rich a better Democrat than Crist? Simply because she was registered as a Democrat earlier?

Let us look at the here and now. This website likes to live in the past, obsessing about history and Lawton Chiles, etc. That’s the ancient past.

Right now Charlie is as good a Democrat as anyone. If not for him Obama would not have been elected or reelected.

It isn’t over until it’s over. If you win the primary, you will have the platform to debate and show what you can really do. There is still time–get out there, show them the ways in which you have impacted our state and the people in it–share your vision in a way that will capture the imagination and inspire voters.

Then, with the backing of the Democratic Party and all your supporters, give Scott a run for his money. Let’s show the world that talent, expertise, heart, courage, and mission trump campaign funds.

Thank you, Nan, for all you have done, and all you continue to do, to help shape policy and reform.

Perhaps Charlie’s falling poll numbers are the consequence of more people paying more attention as the election nears. I have never understood how anyone could believe they could sell this washed up pandering politician to Democrats. Well the answer is they can’t but of course they don’t care. Crist v Scott is a win win for the corporatist. It’s big money protecting big money and the Scott campaign practicing rat **** politics. The voters will be left without a real choice if Senator Rich withdraws and thankfully that is not going to happen.

Charlie is polling within 2 points, which is a statistical tie, despite $10 million of attack ads. Analysts consider that a win for him.

You people are fools if you don’t see what’s happening out there. This primary is why Charlie is faltering. Get her out of the race and we win!

Obviously the results of this poll show how out of whack those angry at our party are. Anyone who wants her to stay in the race is working for the Republicans.

Either you are a good Democrat and get behind Charlie Crist or you are a bad Democrat or even a Republican stool and support Rick Scott.

Those arguing that Charlie Crist was once a Republican this website itself has published the rankings from big business of legislators.

Several Democrats in the House and Senate have gotten higher ratings that Charlie Crist would from AIF and the Florida Chamber.

So in the here and now which is 2014 Charlie is a better Democrat than about half the Senate Democrats and better than many House Democrats and those House Democrats of course being the ones causing the party a lot of trouble.

So many people complain about corporate influence on politicians yet what seems to impress people the most is how much money Crist and Scott are able to raise. Instead of backing the person all I see is praise for financial influence. I don’t believe Nan Rich would sell out to corporate pressure like Crist and Scott and I think that’s why she is not getting any support in the way of contributions. I think both parties are corrupt and this scenario is affirming my suspicions. It will be our loss and a detriment to our natural systems if Rich loses. What a waste. Look at this study/plan that is a revision of a 2010 study about making Florida a global hub for trade. Crist and Scott are cut from the same cloth in many ways. This study answers questions about the reasoning for deregulation, excessive water permitting, new natural gas pipelines, fracking in Florida, dredging Jax and Government Cut in Miami, Adena, new industrial and residential clusters, the regional landfill in Putnam and more. I don’t see any consideration for detrimental effects on the environment in this study.
