Women’s History Month: Mary McLeod Bethune

On a previous week’s Florida History Podcast, we discussed Mary McLeod Bethune, a great Floridian who now has a statue residing in statutory hall at the US Capitol in Washington DC.

Mcleod Bethune is among the most significant women not only in Florida’s History but that of the entire United States.

Her accomplishments include:

  • Founding a college in Daytona Beach that is now Bethune-Cookman University
  • The first black woman appointed to the National Youth Administration
  • Delegate to the founding conference of the United Nations
