San Agustin known today as St Augustine is the oldest permanent European settlement in the continental United States. Founded in 1565, the town was prosperous throughout the 1600’s but fell into decline as did Spanish Florida after the English invasion of 1702. By the time the British invaded again in 1740, San Agustin and Florida had fallen behind the colonies directly to the north economically.
