I’ve joked for years that we have two political parties in Florida – the Republicans in power and those seeking power. Florida’s Democrats painful as it might sound have long been completely irrelevant in terms of political power in state government.

On Wednesday, Politico’s Marc Caputo tweeted something that is spot on, yet difficult for many in the leadership of the Democratic Party to comprehend or  accept – that Republicans fighting with one another (in this case Governor Scott and Speaker Corcoran) has ZERO impact on General Election politics in what is a one party state.

Leaders in the GOP can fight, maneuver and plot without real fear of electoral defeat unless it’s in a primary. That’s what happens when a party wins 17 of the last 18 elections for Governor and Cabinet and close to 80% of truly marginal legislative seats since 2002 (if you take out the 2006 and 2008 cycles the number is no doubt even higher – something we’ll calculate in the near future).

The good news is that the bar is set so low for Florida Democrats almost anything they accomplish in terms of winning elections on the state level will be an improvement over nearly two decades of consistent failure.
