As first reported by ESPNFC and confirmed by our own sources, Volkswagen corporate club VfL Wolfsburg of the German Bundesliga has cancelled its January visit to Orlando and St Petersburg. The Bundesliga club was scheduled to play the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium on January 8 before facing Bahia in Orlando on January 12.
The club will instead send a youth squad to play the Rowdies and Bahia. The Florida Cup runs from January 8-21 in Orlando, St Petersburg and Fort Lauderdale.
On Tuesday, it was reported that former US International David Wagner (a German-American) the current Manager of Huddersfield Town in England’s second division was being lined up to take over Wolfsburg. However, Wagner has declined the offer, a stunning rebuttal considering the relative size and recent stature of both clubs.
Wolfsburg has been a regular fixture near the top of the Bundesliga and won the league in 2008-09. However, this season they are closer to the relegation zone than to a European place, despite yesterday’s 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Mönchengladbach who following the match sacked Manager André Schubert.
