The House of Representatives who thank goodness for the human race DO NOT dictate the foreign policy of the United States voted against approval of the Vienna accord regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons program by a vote of 162-269. Including in the 269 “nay” votes were 25 Democrats. Four of those “NAY” votes included Florida Reps. Ted Deutch, Alcee Hastings, Lois Frankel and Gwen Graham.
Political considerations no doubt guided some of these votes. From the progressive perspective to see so many Democrats side with the GOP’s desire to scuttle this accomplishment of US diplomacy. Irrespective of the emotion regarding the issue some individuals might have demonstrated in this state, the opposition of the GOP to this agreement has been driven almost entirely by political considerations and the lobbying of a foreign government.
I understand the considerations of this vote but have to register strong disappointment in the votes of these four House Democrats from Florida. Thankfully the Republicans political games will not stop this agreement from moving forward following the actions of the US Senate on Thursday.
