The FDP ‘s Executive Director was not directly responsible for the 2014 electoral debacle. But the reality now is that Arceneaux who is a brilliant original thinker and analyst of political trends now has presided at least in theory over two of the worst election cycles in Florida Democrats history, 2010 and 2014.
Sitting a Republican performing Treasure Coast/North Palm Beach district Murphy crushed Republican Carl Domino. Granted Domino is a traditional under-performer going back to his first State House race in 2000, but Murphy’s moderate profile, bipartisan record and especially his emphasis on local issues carried the day for him easily. He is an emerging statewide star for a party dearly in need of one.
Gelber was the key surrogate and strategist for the Crist campaign from the word go last November. Gelber was responsible for much of the Crist campaign strategy and policy emphasis. While progressives like myself liked Crist’s perspective on issues especially when compared to Alex Sink, as well as his south/central Florida oriented strategy the loss has opened Gelber and Crist up for second guessing.
The Tampa Mayor kept his powder dry by not getting involved with Democrats this cycle and now is undamaged going forward. Some may resent Buckhorn’s failure to support Governor Crist or George Sheldon – but given the desperation of Florida Democrats and the party’s willingness to forgive and forget past transgressions rather quickly, I would be shocked if it were truly held against Buckhorn in the future.
DR. BRENDA SNIPES
Broward Supervisor of Elections office was again the epicenter of controversy and ineptitude this election cycle. Broward’s voter turnout continues to be among the lowest in the state because Dr. Snipes office fails to engage in the types of voter education programs other county supervisors do. Some Broward progressive activists theorize that Dr. Snipes, a Democrat who was appointed by Jeb Bush in 2003 and reelected three times since actually seeks to suppress the vote in the most Democratic urban county south of Washington DC. Whether this is the case or not, Dr. Snipes office again botched this cycle in multiple ways.
AMENDMENT 1 SUPPORTERS
Florida proved once again to be an environmentally friendly state on Tuesday. Support for Amendment 1 crossed party and ideological lines and its passage will help to ensure the long-term sustainability of this state’s fragile ecosystem. Despite the efforts of some business interests to defeat this amendment, its passage was never truly in doubt.
Over $2 million was spent by Planned Parenthood on trying to activate women voters to the cause of supporting Charlie Crist, George Sheldon and several legislative candidates. After success in Virginia in 2013, a similar model was applied in Florida. Unfortunately a gender gap hardly existed in the 2014 race in Florida and the money spent appears to have been largely wasted.
