Monday Musings: Carole Crist, Flying over a War Zone, Money in the Governor’s Race, Rick Scott Fundraising at GEO Group Chief Executive Home, How Safe are Florida’s Roads & Bridges?

Where is Carole Crist? Her husband is running for Govenor and she’s no where to be seen. Granted, the RPOF seems to be asking for her tax returns in a ridiculous call for transparency, but it still seems like she could come out and campaign more actively. Even though family members are supposed to be off limits for political attacks, they are still expected to campaign and her absence may cause whispers. A family matters on the campaign trail and the absence of Carole is noted. Even Ann Scott is doing her part – she even has her own little Twitter feed. Will she come out after the primary? Where is she hiding? Crist has no kids to send out on the campaign trail, so he will need her to go out and rally the masses. Let’s hope she comes around – Crist is going to need all the help he can get to beat Scott. –  KB @BurnettKaty

In May 2008 after visiting family in India I flew to London on British Airways to cover the England-USA soccer friendly match that was taking place at Wembley Stadium in West London. I recall being stunned that the flight path from Chennai to London’s Heathrow Airport put us right over the destabilized northwest frontier of Pakistan and over Kandahar in Afghanistan. I seldom get scared on airplane flights as a veteran of lots of transatlantic and domestic flying, but once turbulence happened to get really bad over the very area I was surprised we were flying over I was really scared. I could not understand why BA was routing a flight over a war zone which included British troops. That’s why sadly I wasn’t shocked when MH 17 was shot down over rebel held Donetsk on Thursday. Given my long-held views of Vladimir Putin’s Russia as the greatest geopolitical threat to the global order, the shoot down of a civilian aircraft even if accidental sadly did not create the shock in me that it did among the vast majority of the world’s citizens.  – KK @kkfla737

Who can keep track of the money in this race? The Democratic Governor’s association giving money to Charlie Crist, Crist is transferring money to the FDP, the FDP is giving money to Florida For All. No matter how many times the money changes hands, it never seems to be enough. Any way you cut it, money has got to start pouring in for Democrats – right now there is barely enough to trickle down to the down ballot races. Attorney General, the Senate, the house seats – how many are going to come up short because there just isn’t enough money to go around? Can the National Democratic Party not realize that who controls the Florida Legislature is of vital interest in national politics? It seems like having a greater representation of Democrats in the legislature might help Clinton in 2016 – why are not more national interests getting involved in state politics? It seems like everyone agrees that Rick Scott needs to go, yet everybody is waiting around for someone else to pay for it. Everybody better start writing checks, or else we will be joining together to thank Progressive Choice among others for sticking us with Scott for four more years. – KB @BurnettKaty

Governor Scott will be raising money at the home of GEO Group Chief Executive Officer George Zoley tonight. The $10,000-per-person VIP fundraiser is further proof of the depth of the types of relationships Scott has built with the private prison industry. Of course Scott has a particularly close relationship with the GEO Group.  Who can forget the $20,000 gift for the expensive largely taxpayer funded renovation of the Governor’s Mansion pushed by Scott? GEO Group’s foothold in the state was  – KK @kkfla737

How safe are Florida’s raods and bridges? Compared to other states in the union Florida’s infrastructure is quite safe. This past week, The Wall Street Journal had an interesting interactive look at the decaying roads and bridges around the country. Florida fares quite well when contrasted to states like Texas and Connecticut. Florida’s roads are particularly good with only 4% in bad condition. Of Florida’s bridges, only 17% are obsolete, not great but when compared to other highly populated states it could be much worse. – – KK @kkfla737

Ms. Crist emails me often, so she isn’t hiding.

There is a primary next month. Crist is not yet the Democratic nominee. Is this site paid for by Crist?

The Dems have a golden opportunity to eliminate ole Scott from the November ballot, period! He happens to have two opponents in the GOP primary Aug. 26th; one is a credible candidate from Sarasota, a woman who has run previously for the FL Legislature. This must be done in the next few days (I have already done so) and is perfectly legal: call your S/E office, change your part affiliation to “Republican”, and while you are at it, ask for an absentee ballot. Then, well before the primary on Aug. 26th, cast your vote for the woman with the hyphenated name; if enough voters do this (only registered Repubs may do so), we may eliminate the Scott problem well ahead of the general election. Take ten minutes today and do this!

This may be legal, but it is not honest. The republican candidate is a real person–
Elizabeth Cuevas-Neunder –not just “a woman with the hyphenated name.”

Where was Carol Crist when her husband was governor? She was shopping for a home in Georgetown. The Florida governor’s mansion has never held any interest for Mrs. Crist. She is a New York City socialite. Her interest in Florida does not extend beyond Fisher Island.
