First off let me establish my views of Benghazi. I believe it was a tragedy and unlike many Democrats I am willing to admit it reflects poorly on this administration and a certain degree of stonewalling took place because it was an election year. But to somehow equate Benghazi the way the GOP and FOX News have with the biggest scandals in American history is simply laughable.

When looking at the Middle East and Central Asia the previous administration created the world where Benghazi could happen. Intelligence failures, an unwillingness to secure American personnel, misleading the public about events and ultimately strengthening America’s enemies especially Iran through destabilizing Iraq and Afghanistan. The installation of pro-Iranian “democratic” regimes in Iraq and Afghanistan has led us directly to this standoff with Iran now. The deaths of close to 5,000 American servicemen were based on orchestrated attempts to spin minimal intelligence to justify war. The use of idealism to justify wars of choice that strengthened our enemies created a culture of knee-jerk intervention in the region, while our security interests in other parts of the world have been neglected by both the Bush and Obama Administrations.

The willingness of the Bush Administration to suspend reality even two years into the Iraq War was never properly investigated by Congress. The role of war profiteers and Iranian agents like Ahmed Chalibi in formulating American policy was never properly investigated in the then Republican majority Congress.

If the House leadership really wants to set up a Clinton-era esque Benghazi Special Committee chaired by a rabid partisan like Rep. Trey Gowdy, they best take a look at the last decade of outrage.  Let’s take a look at ten years of mistakes leading Benghazi. Make it bi-partisan opening the skeletons of the last two administrations and their enablers in Congress.

Only a thorough look at American policy and how we got here will satisfy at a time when our national security interests are severely threatened and neither party has the right ideals nor the political will to deal with the realities of geopolitics.
