House Democrats do the right thing for the first time in years

The election of Rep. Mark Pafford (D-West Palm Beach) is far and away the best thing House Democrats have done in years. A party and caucus that have long played a game of accommodation with the Republican majority and have failed to offer Floridians a clear vision or choice in elections made a definitive step away from a failed past tonight.  Rep. Pafford unlike the majority of his Democratic colleagues stood tall on countless issues demonstrating the courage in his convictions to do the right thing. He is a shining example of what an elected official should be but alas too many are not. From my vantage point, he is the single most accomplished and influential progressive voice in the Florida Legislature, and is an inspiration to those of us around the state who remember when we had dozens of members like Mark Pafford.

Let us hope Pafford’s election is merely the beginning as the party moves away from “me too” corporatism and conservatism and towards a party based on values, ideology and governing competence. For too long the Democrats have offered nothing in opposition to the Republicans something, even if that something was deeply flawed vision for state and nation. The Republican vision and ideology was at least consistent and easy to explain to voters while Democrats have consistently denied Florida voters the choices that are demanded of Democratic Republic, which Florida is part of.

Contrasting visions and ideologies in the marketplace of ideas should always be encouraged. In today’s Tallahassee one size fits all has been pushed by an arrogant Republican majority whose tight control of state government resembles that of the communist party in the old Soviet Union. But the Republicans have implemented this Soviet-like governance largely thanks to the incompetence of Democrats and the fear many Democratic elected officials have for standing tall on important issues.

Today, let us hope this has changed for the good. More on this story and other news tomorrow on TFS.

  2. What exactly is Pafford going to do for money? You do know he cannot raise money and you do realize music exactly successful lawyer or anybody with a trade that can get money.

    1. Wait, who in the Florida Democratic Party HAS been able to raise money? Tant, the knight in shining armor when it came to fundraising, failed to deliver. Rouson, who many said was picked because he could raise money, failed to deliver. So, Fla Dem, your solution? Your choice?

  3. Rep. Pafford can raise money. It has not been necessary for him to raise a lot of money, because he has a safe district. Yes, he could have done, like so many others, and soaked people for campaign contributions that he did not need. Stand by.

  5. Hey there would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with?

I’m going to start my own blog soon but I’m having
a difficult time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.

P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!
