One of he finest men I met and worked with in Tallahassee has passed on. I worked out Douglas’ office during the Pete Peterson Gubernatorial Campaign in 2001 and after Peterson aborted his run, I and several colleagues stayed on in the office for a few months while we tried to sort out what we did next. Mr. Douglas was a true gentleman and a legend whose institutional memory went back to a time when most leaders in the state actually had a vision and cared about the future of Florida. Today the legislature and cabinet are dominated by self-promoting typical politicians, something completely different than the Florida that Douglas advocated and helped mold.
He will be sorely missed.

I remember his leadership during the Chiles’ governor’s race. When he spoke, we all listened because his judgement was impeccable.
