Continued development is threatening the Florida Panther with extinction

The growth in Eastern Collier County has been ridiculous. As someone who regularly hikes in Big Cypress National Preserve and Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, I have seen the increase in traffic along SR 29 and the creeping of housing developments further and further east along Collier’s main thoughroufares. Now we have this report from WUSF.

  1. Development has gone insane or they want to drill for oil which is also insane. The GREED of people who Never consider the consequences of their actions or just don’t care, is what Florida is becoming. The Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) is listed as an endangered species under the Federal Endangered Species Act and Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule. It has been on the endangered species list since 1967, but its population has rebounded from an estimated low of 10 to over 200 in 2022. As of June 2023, the population is estimated to be between 120–230 adults and subadults. You might think that their numbers are better but EXTINCTION can happen in a short time in a year or two, Environmentalist like myself are stewards of the earth who kept fighting for their existence.
