“Feast Week” has ended and Florida schools are looking perhaps better than expected early in the season.
- Miami is ranked in the AP Top 10 and already boasts power conference wins over UCF, Georgia and Kansas State. None of those three games were particularly competitive, with Miami running away from the opposition before halftime. But tough tests this week are coming up for the Canes as they travel to Rupp Arena tonight to face Kentucky and play Notre Dame on Saturday. They also play a good Colorado team next week. A case can be made that Miami has “overscheduled” early in the campaign, but after the Colorado game, they have a relatively light Holiday season.
- FAU stunningly lost a home game to little Bryant College but bounced back in a big way winning the ESPN Events Invitational at Disney… The Owls have been without Nick Boyd for several games while Alijah Martin wasn’t fully fit until this past week. FAU, quite frankly outside of the Bryant game looks a team that could win the National Championship. Just wait until Boyd is back. The nation should be trembling.
- Florida has started well and despite neutral court losses to Baylor and Virginia (both were expected) they crushed Florida State in Gainesville and beat a good Pitt team. UC Riverside transfer Zyon Pullin is proving to be the backcourt player the Gators needed the last two seasons but didn’t have. Tyrese Samuel a transfer from Seton Hall is also proving to be a nice addition.
- UCF was crushed by Miami the first week of the season, but no shame in that as the Hurricanes are a top 10 team. Slowly but surely Johnny Dawkins teams looks like they are meshing but a loss to Stetson set them back. And honestly the Big 12 is in my opinion is the best conference in the country so it probably will still be a long season. Nonetheless, UCF is now 5-2.
- Florida State was crushed by Florida in Gainesville but have bounced back with a few solid wins including a win versus a top 25 Colorado team. Jalen Warley has gotten off to a very good start this season.
- Stetson under Donnie Jones beat UCF and are 4-2. A great start. Stetson has a great chance to make noise in the Atlantic Sun.
- Jacksonville is 4-2 with only losses being to power teams Xavier and Pitt.
- Bethune-Cookman started the season well but have now lost three straight.
- UNF was competitive against LSU and is 4-3 overall.
- Gulf Coast, FIU and Florida A&M have all started poorly but it’s worth mentioning FIU is the only opponent that wasn’t down double-digits at halftime to Miami and the only school to lead Miami at any point in a game after the first five minutes this season. In fact FIU led Miami at the under 12 timeout in the second half. The Hurricanes other wins, three of which were against power conference opponents have all been blowouts, effectively done by halftime, regardless of final score.
