Florida’s 2nd Congressional District is the largest congressional district in Florida by land area and consists of all of Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Taylor, Wakulla, Washington counties, portions of Holmes, and Lafayette. It’s massive absurdly, ridiculously, large. The kind of district designed by a bored majority party that wants to make it impossible for a minority to challenge it, you know because it is!

Recently this ridiculous district has been in the news.  You see this district is a part of the Florida Panhandle, which remains one of the last competitive and unpredictable districts in the sunshine state. So it’s only fitting that since 2010, it’s been radically altered several times, perhaps more than any other in the South (outside North Carolina of course where they run on a different map every two years it seems).  Making a predictably blue-leaning district to a competitive district to a red district.

Because you know…Democracy. Things came to a head in 2020, when they took Al Lawson’s fifth district away and just made it a part of the second and fourth districts. Again, Democracy!

Well. That was a mistake. On Friday, Aug. 11,  all the parties of a state-level lawsuit challenging Florida’s congressional maps entered into an agreement that could potentially pave the way for the state to resurrect a Black-performing district in North Florida before the 2024 primary elections. You see they now seem to think that the new districts created by the now politically weak state governor, was in fact – racist! Oh, perish the thought, dear reader.

So, it looks like a deal is soon going to be struck. The Democrats get their old congressional district back, Al Lawson gets to get off the couch and Republicans can go back to destroying central Florida maps.

Now I can hear you asking yourselves, “But, Bobby! You crafty and devilishly handsome master of political theory! What does this have to do with Neal Dunn?!”

Well, I’ll tell you. Neal Dunn, republican congressman, doctor, MAGA freakshow, avid supporter of purging, secret Hilary Duff fan club President, and basic douche; is currently one of the worst members of congress. I know that is saying something!

But unlike the Greens, Gaetz, and Voldemorts that make up the Republican majority, Dunn manages to perform the greatest hat trick of all. Being simultaneously an awful human being and boring as hell.

The democrats for their part have not recruited nor are actively recruiting a challenger for Mr. Milk Toast next fall.

So once again it rests on the world-weary shoulders of the Florida Squeeze to showcase some of the worst aspects of this pathetic congressional track record.

2017- Present – wants to defund the Department of Education

2017 – Dunn voted for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which added

trillions to the national debt

2017- Votes to repeal Obamacare

2017- refusing to host town halls in Tallahassee

2018 – Chief of staff resigns amid sexual harassment scandal.

2018 – Both former chief of staff and Dunn named investigated in a

House ethics probe.

2020 – Covid 19 denier… gets covid 19.

2020 – Voted against any public stimulus during the pandemic

2021 – Voted to object to the certification of several states’

electoral votes.

2023 – Supports a Biden impeachment

2023-  Doesn’t support spending for public lands, wants to teach creationism, and

thinks there is no way to prevent school shootings.

In short, it doesn’t matter

Big Bend Democrats if you lose to this man! It doesn’t matter if you are outspent by him if he refuses to debate you if he is protected by gerrymandering. He is still a representation of all that is wrong with our Congress and our politics.

Yes, North Florida Democrats, we are a minority party. Yes, he will probably win re-election, even if the second congressional district becomes competitive again. But, in this strange red district, in this strange corner of America, there are still over two hundred thousand voiceless Americans because they don’t have a congressional nominee on the ballot. Who doesn’t want Dunn, who isn’t represented by him, and isn’t given a choice. Please give them a voice next November.
