Unfortunately, this was always in the cards after Ian – Avelo Airlines an exciting Ultra-low cost carrier we’ve previously featured at TFS is postponing their launch of a base in Fort Myers indefensibly. Speculation is that the resources will be reallocated to Orlando, where Avelo operates a base already, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Sarasota. Flights from Fort Myers to New Haven, CT will continue operating but other flights and planning routes are suspended.
Avelo’s letter to passengers is posted below.
All of us here at Avelo Airlines have been heartbroken by the destruction and loss that Hurricane Ian left in its wake – especially along Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast. Unfortunately, it will take months – even years – to rebuild much of the beautiful Fort Myers region. Fort Myers has been one of Avelo’s most popular destinations; so much so, we recently announced plans to make Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) Avelo’s fourth base.
While we continue to believe full-heartedly in Fort Myers’ potential as a destination and base, the unfortunate reality is that we have seen a significant decline in bookings to and from Fort Myers since Hurricane Ian. Consequently, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our plans to open Avelo’s Fort Myers base. Regrettably, this has resulted in the cancellation of your Fort Myers itinerary. You will receive additional information about your cancellation from Avelo’s Customer Support Crew. This communication will include details regarding your refund which we expect will take up to 21 days to process.
As a gesture of our appreciation for your business and understanding, we are providing you with a $25 Avelo Travel Fund (ATF) credit, which you can apply to future travel on any other Avelo flight. You will receive more information about your ATF credit from our Customer Support Crew very soon.
