Avelo will add new service to Sarasota/Bradenton. Thrice-weekly flights to New Haven begin January 13.
Spirit will add Orlando to Ponce service in February.
A source tells me that Norse Atlantic is likely to fly from Fort Lauderdale to London next summer. We had previously reported they would fly from Fort Lauderdale to Oslo. I am not sure how this will be done, given the UK is no longer governed by the US-EU Open Skies agreement due to Brexit, so presumably Norse Atlantic would be forming a UK-based subsidiary to make this happen?
Meanwhile several pulldowns of flights to Florida:
It appears Alaska Airlines is permanently exiting Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Tampa to Los Angeles. Alaska’s One World partner American Airlines flies Fort Lauderdale-Los Angeles (one of four carrier remaining on the route with Alaska’s withdrawal) and United Airlines is beginning Fort Myers and Tampa to Los Angeles service next month. Alaska is also cutting Fort Lauderdale to Portland nonstops permanently.
Now to December cuts:
Spirit has cut the following Florida flights for December: Fort Lauderdale to Hartford/Springfield and Minneapolis/St Paul. Orlando to Port-au-Prince and Greensboro.
Sunwing won’t fly Fort Lauderdale-Montreal in December.
American Airlines has cut half its scheduled flights from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles, Boston and New York-JFK. They will not fly Orlando-New York-LGA or Miami-Montreal in December either.
Quite frankly these pull downs are shocking given December is peak travel season and most of these routes are heavily traveled ones. While it appeared Florida had turned the corner on Covid, it appears travel in general will be down again this winter and confidence in Florida as a tourist destination given the most recent Covid issues down here.
