US Open Cup kicks off May 9 with a record number of Florida sides

A record ten sides from the state of Florida will participate in the 2017 US Open Cup, an event whose history dates back to 1914. As recently as 2005, Florida sent zero teams to the Open Cup.

Florida will be represented in the very first game of the competition, a matchup between the host Red Force FC and visiting South Florida Surf (of Port St Lucie) on May 9 in Miami. The winner will face Miami FC in the second round. The next day Miami United FC will host Boca Raton FC in a local south Florida derby. The winner will face the Jacksonville Armada FC in the second round. The same night The Villages FC face off with the Jacksonville Armada’s U-23 team. The winner will face the Tampa Bay Rowdies in round two. Orlando City SC will enter the competition in Round 4 and Orlando City B as a professional reserve side is ineligible to participate per US Soccer Federation rules.

The Jacksonville Armada FC CANNOT face it’s U-23 side before the finals per US Soccer rules.

Last year’s best performers from Florida were the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, who defeated Orlando City SC 2-1 at the Citrus Bowl in a Round of 16 matchup. The Strikers are not participating in the 2017 competition. The team is the process of being sold per multiple sources and is expected to take the field again later this year or in early 2018.

This year’s winning team will receive $250,000, a berth in the 2019 CONCACAF Champions’ League. The runner-up will earn $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $15,000 cash prize.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer’s National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 103 consecutive years dating from 1914. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

We’ll track the 2017 Open Cup closely here as long as Florida sides are involved in the competition.
