We didn’t notice this at the time but when Finnair returned to Miami International Airport after a long absence (including a period when the airline served Fort Lauderdale instead of Miami) last month, MIA became the first airport in the United States to be served by 100 different airlines.
By comparison, Atlanta the world’s busiest airport is served by only 16 airlines and London Heathrow, the world’s third busiest is served by 78. Miami was at one time among the ten busiest airports in the world, but the loss of traffic to Fort Lauderdale over the years has dropped Miami out of the top 20 worldwide. However, Miami is still ranked as one of the top ten busiest airport systems in the world, a statistic that includes traffic at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International and Palm Beach International airports.
