Far too often we see Democrats and Republicans eating up the talking points of their party instead of the issues that affect everyday Floridians. A perfect example of this is the issue with stand your ground and gun control laws. For over a decade the Florida Legislature has led the way on gun laws ranging from Jeb Bush’s signature bill of Stand your ground to Charlie Crist’s honoring the NRA’s Marion Hammer to the Women’s Hall of Fame to the Docs and Glocks bill signed by Governor Scott.
In 2005, the bill passed by a 39-0 vote. In the House, the mixed party line vote started the trend across the country to pass Stand Your Ground legislation.
The message is clear. The sick and tired are tired of being sick and tired of partisan talking points that are false. There is a paper trail to prove it…voting records of the legislature.
For Republicans if you are “pro-life” that would imply your responsibility is to focus on the child outside of the womb. For Democrats, your savior can’t be someone who picked Marion Hammer (NRA President) to be put in the Women’s Hall of Fame and has a 100% NRA record for the nearly two decades he had served in the State Legislature.
To both parties, stop focusing on a fake fear of having your guns being taken away because you are missing something…..your children are the ones being taken away. Many Democrats have been wrong on this issue like they were on the Iraq war. Like the right, many Democrats have also taken funds from Marion Hammer’s biggest cheerleader….Charlie Crist. Yes, the same man whose college roommate was the finance chair of the Republican Party; named war profiteer by Congressman Henry Waxman and a large contributor to the Republican Party and to Former Congressman Robert Wexler. We need to protect life when science considered the fetus to be a life, not determined by some temporary elected official. We can do this by focusing more on common-sense laws while teaching values to our children at home.
Stand your ground on the issue instead of just your party. You can start by passing the Trayvon Martin Act by the Dream Defenders.
