Spirit flies out of bankruptcy with several new routes

Spirit Airlines, the largest air carrier based in Florida has emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As part of its revised business plan, it will begin offering more upscale amenities to appeal to business travelers as well as offering sub-daily frequencies to smaller markets. Spirit’s smallest aircraft is the Airbus A319 which seats about 150 people, so the airline has been dependent on routes between bigger markets in addition to being an ultra-low cost carrier.

As part of this new strategy, Spirit will offer new nonstop service from Orlando and Fort Lauderdale to Chattanooga and Columbia, SC (Fort Lauderdale-Columbia is technically a resumption but was last flow by Spirit in 2009, but since 16 years is a long time, we’re calling it new). Additionally, Spirit will resume service between Fort Lauderdale and Latrobe, PA and Los Angeles while making St Louis and Milwaukee service year-round rather than seasonal.

Spirit is the second largest carrier at Orlando International Airport (behind Southwest) and the largest at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International.
