Allegiant relaunching Orlando Int’l in May – what does it mean for Sanford?

Allegiant who is pretty much the only operator at Sanford Airport (SFB), where it has a major base is relaunching service to Orlando International (MCO) in May 2024 with flights to Knoxville, Asheville and Allentown. All three destinations are served from Sanford as well. In terms of Sanford, they will get a new flight to Rapid City.

In 2010, Allegiant tried to split its operation between SFB and MCO, but a year later returned the entire operation to Sanford.

At the moment it appears Allegiant isn’t cutting any Sanford flights, unlike in 2010 (when AirTran was riding high at MCO and flying to some of the same cities as Allegiant was from SFB). However, with the growth of Avelo and Breeze at Orlando International, Allegiant needs to compete on routes that are or will potentially be flown by those two airlines- so that explains this move to MCO.

While there is some political discord between Seminole County and the airport operator at SFB I don’t think that’s the real thrust for Allegiant’s reentry to Orlando International.

Also in May, Allegiant will launch three other new Florida flights. Punta Gorda to Washington-Dulles, St Petersburg to Bismarck and Fort Lauderdale to Traverse City.

Splitting a hub city never seems like a good idea. Your point regarding Breeze and Avelo is certainly valid, but I still wonder if this won’t just end up being a situation where G4 is cannibalizing their own traffic.

That’s what happened last time they went to MCO. So they shifted back. But recently they have been flying to Moore primary airport so maybe this time it’ll be different.
