Southwest launching Fort Lauderdale-Omaha and resuming several Florida routes including Fort Myers Ian-related suspensions

Unsurprisingly Southwest Airlines took advantage of the buzz right before the holiday weekend to announce several new and resuming routes to the Sunshine State effective in January.

New nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to Omaha is included.

In additional the following Florida routes that were previously flown either before Covid or last winter (in the case of Fort Myers pre-Ian) return:

Fort Lauderdale-Albany/Louisville/Phoenix

Fort Myers- Buffalo/Dallas/Grand Rapids/Hartford/Louisville/Providence/Washington-DCA

Orlando- Cincinnati/Detroit/Minneapolis-St Paul

Tampa-Cleveland/Minneapolis-St Paul

It’s worth noting that while Southwest dramatically increased it’s scale of destinations in Florida during the pandemic, focusing on destinations such as Panama City, Destin, Sarasota and Miami, a shift back to the airline’s “core four” Florida destinations of Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa seems to be occurring.
