Apologies that this column hasn’t run in months. My father’s passing and other family and work responsibilities have taken me away from the commercial aviation space of late. But we have a load of updates below.
Foreign carriers
Norse Atlantic will shift its transatlantic services to Oslo and London (Gatwick) from Fort Lauderdale to Miami in September.
Saudia is planning new services to Miami from Saudi Arabia in the near future.
Azul is resuming service from Belo Horizonte to Fort Lauderdale this week and to Orlando in September.
Canada Jetlines will become the SIXTH scheduled airline on the Fort Lauderdale to Toronto (Pearson) route.
Domestic carriers
American will begin nonstops from Miami to Portland (OR) in the winter. American will also resume nonstops from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles and Washington (National).
Alaska will begin nonstops from Miami to Portland in the winter. Alaska will also resume nonstops from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles.
Do those two lines look like they are the same? Outside of the FLL-DCA part, they are!
It’s worth noting at this point American and Alaska are technically alliance partners in One World. I’ve said for years airline alliances are giving way to either equity partnerships or joint ventures where revenue is shared. As the punch, counter-punch game of route adds and resumptions continues between AA and Alaska, it’s a reminder that airline partners, unless they have economic incentives not to, will still compete hard with each other.
Avelo has commenced services from New Haven to Melbourne and Daytona Beach. They have also added nonstops from Orlando to Binghamton, Charlottesville and Mobile since our last update. The airline will be dropping Wilmington (NC)- West Palm Beach services in the fall. I also understand Wilmington (NC) -Fort Lauderdale is likely to be dropped soon as well.
Breeze is beginning new services from Orlando to Portland (ME) and Providence. They also will begin Tampa to both Providence and Raleigh/Durham in the coming months. The airline also begins Sarasota to Providence flights next month.
JetBlue is beginning Tampa to Aguadilla nonstops next month.
Southwest is resuming nonstops from Orlando to Albuquerque next month as well as adding new service to Long Beach in July and El Paso in September. The airline will also resume Fort Lauderdale to Louisville nonstops in November.
Sun Country is beginning Orlando to Milwaukee nonstops in December
