Throwing up a Twitter thread I put out there earlier to snap back at critics (mostly living outside of Florida with no geographic or cultural knowledge of this state) saying crazy things.
People saying “why didn’t they evacuate,” Even in the best of times getting on and off Sanibel and Captiva is a slog. Trust me, been there, done that. Fort Myers Beach and Pine Island only slightly better. Evacuations were never going to be easy 1/ #Ian #HurricaneIan

The fact the NHC unlike past peninsula storms choose to pinpoint just a small area initially to place under a Hurricane Warning caused all sorts of damage to the flow & timing of evacuations. Go back on my TL and see what I said about SW Florida days ago. #Ian #HurricaneIan 2/

In Irma we had the combination of the NHC putting large portions of the peninsula perhaps prematurely (but later justified) under a Hurricane Warning DAYS before impacts and Governor Scott was urging people to leave 3/ #Ian #HurricaneIan

This time the NHC was hedging the whole time if you read their public discussion advisories but unlike Irma didn’t take the same actions in terms of early preemptive warnings. In fact in many places warnings & watches came way late. #HurricaneIan #Ian 4/END
