Few things about North Central Florida and the Panhandle are more unique and precious than the springs that populate the regions. Florida’s springs are famous around the country and not only are critical to our water supply but help stimulate the economy with ecotourism in the region. The natural beauty of the region is unique and unparalleled in comparison to much of the south. As a student at the University of Florida and later a long-time part-time resident of Tallahassee through various political and legislative work, I have taken the time to visit just about every Florida State Park that features a spring. However, since those days many of the springs have come under threat and some are now in lamentable condition.
This legislative session, saving the springs were thought to be a priority for both House and Senate leaders, but at this point in time it appears action may not come this year.
On Tuesday, former Governor Buddy MacKay who once represented much of the Big Bend area and North Central Florida in the State Senate from a sprawling Ocala based district penned a timely and poignant op-ed piece for the Gainesville Sun on this critical issue.
Few understand the issue like MacKay does and it would wise to heed his words.
It is well worth a read for anyone interested in the fate of Florida’s fragile ecosystem and environment.
