CPAC 2013 is being put forth as the future of the conservative movement. But thus far it is proving to be anything but. Take Allen West for example. He was one of the introductory speakers for the gathering. Much like his usual speeches given during his failed run for Congress in 2012, he didn’t deviate from his usual talking points. But it was the tone and style of what West says that makes his speeches so painful to listen to.
Take, for example, his insistence that liberals (or anyone who doesn’t identify as a conservative Republican) are all about bowing down to the socialist, evil agenda of President Obama. He claims that Democrats are all about dividing this nation into groups: men against women, rich against poor, patriots against anti-Americans. If this last election taught us nothing else, it’s that said groups felt divided by the Republican agenda. It was the Republican party who put women against men when it came to providing general access to birth control through health care reform? It was the GOP who pitted minorities and the working class against the 1% during fundraisers, accepting defeat among the 47% because Obama was giving them handouts? According to Allen West, Liberals divide Americans into “little groups” for the purpose of electoral gains. Evidently, those “little groups” didn’t see themselves as being different from the rest of America.
West continued his speech by talking about how we’re all in it together and how dare “Liberals” breed a culture of hate amongst the multi-cultural fabric of this nation? This comes from a man whose focus is on how Muslim Americans are generally evil. What else breeds a culture of hatred than when a man pits a culture against the rest of the nation?
My favorite part of the speech was when he talked about Americans overcoming hardships. West spoke about the Revolution, the Civil War, the Great Depression and the threat of Nazis. He went on to say that we will persevere when Obama finally packs his bags and goes back to Chicago. Apparently, that’s how a nation comes together and fights through hard times – compare the Commander in Chief to Hitler and tyranny.
The most telling portion of his speech to CPAC was when Allen West spoke about where peace comes from. According to him, real peace comes from the Marine Corps and not the Peace Corps. Are we to believe that his definition of Conservative principles, the values and integrity he fought for, – that conservatives’ duty is to serve fellow man, regardless of sex, race, affiliation and creed – are the antithesis of the Peace Corps? One has to wonder if his speech writers collaborate on one speech, or if he even reads them over and thinks before he speaks.
