The probable overturning of Roe v Wade should be a seminal moment in the modern history of the United States. No excuse remains to sit on the fence about the threat posed by the GOP on the national level. We can have our disputes about the transactional nature of local Democrats and other matters, but nothing clarifies the danger we face more than the overturning of Roe.
This nation is on its way to leaving the first world, and joining the developing world and illiberal thoecracies in so many ways – voter suppression, denial of electoral reality, coup attempts and reproductive health.
That this comes at a time when access to reproductive health for women is increasing in the developing world, even in staunchly religious nations.
Anyhow, Florida Democrats often are asleep at the wheel in reacting to events. But this is no ordinary time and this is no normal event. Here is Chairman Manny Diaz’s reaction:
“This is what Republicans stand for. By overturning Roe v. Wade, they are severely limiting women’s rights to control their own bodies and make their own health care decisions. If this report is true, the Supreme Court’s decision will only embolden extremist Republicans to continue attacking the right to choose nationwide. Florida Democrats are determined to fight back against every effort to do so.
Republicans like Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio have long campaigned on overturning Roe v. Wade and banning abortion. Just last month, Florida Republicans began to wage an all-out war on reproductive rights in Florida with an extreme 15-week abortion ban, even refusing to create exemptions for survivors of rape, incest, and human trafficking. Elections have consequences, and the Supreme Court has made the stakes of this year’s elections painfully clear: we must elect Democrats at every level who will protect our reproductive freedom and vote out the Republicans who are trying to roll back our rights.”
