JetBlue making major Florida push with several exciting new routes

JetBlue Airways announced a significant expansion to its route network on Thursday. Included in the announcement was the launching of a new base at Newark. The new base will compliment the airline’s large hub at New York-JFK.

The New York-based airline has focus cities in New York, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and San Juan.

COVID-19 is changing the airline industry dramatically and jetBlue had prior to March been trying to fend off competition from American and Delta in Boston as well as from Southwest and Spirit in Fort Lauderdale.

The airline will grow not only Fort Lauderdale and Orlando with the announced expansion, but also secondary Florida points. In an era when the major US airlines are retrenching to hub airports to maximize connecting traffic, jetBlue is launching a whole bunch of point-to-point flights which will be interesting to analyze once we have data on passenger loads.

The new routes include the first nonstop service between south Florida ( Fort Lauderdale) and Portland, Oregon as well as several new services from the northeast and Midwest to Florida.
